[영국 석사 유학준비] #6: 자기소개서(PS) 작성

영국 석사 유학 지원서류의 가장 핵심이라고 할 수 있는 자기소개서 작성에 대해 설명하려고 한다. 보통 PS(Personal Statement)는 학교마다 정해진 분량이 다르고, 별다른 기준이 없다면 A4용지 2장을 넘기지 않는 선에서 작성하는 것이 좋다. 간혹가다 3장을 쓰는 분들도 계시지만, 나는 1장 반이 조금 넘는 분량을 작성하였다.
 
학업계획서는 총 7문단으로 구성하였으며, 각 문단 별 내용을 직접 적어 보려고 한다. 내가 지원한 시티, 글래스고, 골드스미스의 PS 내용은 대부분 비슷비슷하며 골드스미스 버전을 조금씩 수정하여 사용하였다. 이 글을 작성하는 시점엔 아직 골드스미스의 결과가 나오지 않았고, 시티와 글래스고에서 컨디셔널 오퍼를 받은 상태이므로 글래스고 PS를 공개해 보려고 한다. 시티는 500단어 제한이 있어 분량이 짧으며, 글래스고의 버전을 요약하고 내용을 조금씩 바꾸어 적었다.

1. PS 문단별 내용

나는 총 7문단으로 구성된 PS를 작성하였다. 언뜻 보기엔 평범해 보이고 쉬워 보일지 몰라도 나는 이 PS를 작성하는 데 꽤 많은 시간 동안 애를 먹고 몇 번을 갈아엎었다. 다행히 유학원에서 기대 이상으로 꼼꼼히 첨삭을 해 주셨고, 결과적으로 컨디셔널 오퍼를 받을 수 있었다. 나름 합격 PS이니 많은 사람들에게 도움이 되기를 바란다.
 

1문단: 서두, 석사 지원 동기

My future goal is to plan and support projects that seek to reduce social conflict by promoting cultural diversity values and art by letting parties that are in conflict work together in bands and orchestras. I have experience in creating an orchestra where various members of the university community who were experiencing conflict came together. Also, I conducted a project that resolved regional conflicts through the arts. I majored in Media & Journalism and minored in Christian Culture Studies at undergraduate level, and accumulated significant knowledge and skills related to the cultural industry. Through this, I learnt that cultural policy of Korea is based heavily on that of the UK. Thus, I would like to undertake the MSc Creative Industries & Cultural Policy programme at the University of Glasgow, which is renowned for cultural policy, and study ways to systematically operate and support socially necessary art programmes.
 
첫 문단에는 앞으로 내가 하고 싶은 것, 앞으로 내가 할 것들의 내용을 요약하여 적고 내가 영국의 글래스고에 가고 싶은 이유를 적었다. 막연히 '하고 싶어서'가 아니라, 구체적이고 전문적인 이유를 적어주는 것이 좋다. 나는 앞으로 어떤 것을 하고 싶고, 그걸 위해서 지금까지 어떠어떠한 일을 해 왔다, 그런 걸 하다 보니 영국 글래스고의 해당 프로그램을 알게 되었고 그곳에서 어떤 걸 배우고 얻고 싶다는 내용이 들어가면 좋다.
 

2문단: 학업 외 경험 1 - 학교 오케스트라 활동

Leveraging my experience of being a member of a local youth orchestra in elementary school and founding orchestras in middle and high school, I also found an orchestra at my university where students, professors, and staff played together. Overseeing orchestras for several years, I realised that music could bring people together and aid in resolving conflicts. For instance, by founding the orchestra 'ㅇㅇ’ in university, which was open to all members of the university, including students, professors, faculty, cleaners, security guards, and workers in the university cafeteria, I endeavoured to solve various issues the university was facing. It was difficult to recruit members due to having very different viewpoints, but I, as a leader, worked hard and recruited members. At first, it was difficult to create orchestral harmony given members’ diverse perspectives, but soon we focussed on music instead of conflict, and united centred around music.
 
나의 가장 큰 장점은 바로 어릴 때부터 지금까지 '오케스트라'를 꾸준히 해 왔다는 것이다. 특히 오케스트라를 그냥 꾸준히 한 게 아니라 중학교, 고등학교, 대학교 때 오케스트라를 창단하고 1기 악장 및 회장으로 활동한 이력이 있다. 이 점을 적극적으로 살려 2문단에 이 내용을 적었다. 사실 오케스트라를 만들고 활동하면서 느낀 점, 배운 점에 대해서만 써도 책 한 권을 쓸 수 있기 때문에 겨우 저 정도로만 끝내는 것이 너무 아쉬웠지만... PS에 다양한 이야기를 담기 위해서는 이 정도 선에서 끝낼 수밖엔 없었다.
 
사실 초안을 오케스트라 내용으로만 썼다가 유학원에서 내용을 완전히 싹 다 바꾸는 것이 어떨까 하는 의견을 주셨다. 그때는 '나의 피땀 섞인 경험을 왜 지우라는 거야!' 하면서 속상했지만, 시간이 흐른 후 그때 썼던 초안을 다시 읽어보니 도저히 낯이 뜨거워서 쳐다보기가 부끄러울 정도로 민망한 글이었다. 내 정신을 차리게 해 준 유학원에 정말 감사하다. 사실 이 부분 내용 줄이기가 너무 어려워서 유학원의 도움을 정말 많이 받았다. 이때 나는 내가 얼마나 분량 줄이기를 못 하는지, Admission Team이 좋아할 만한 글쓰기를 못 하는지 깨달았다. 그렇게 나는 모든 욕심을 버리고 어떤 어려움이 있었는지, 그 문제 해결을 위한 나의 역할은 무엇이었는지, 어떻게 해결했는지, 이를 통해 배운 점을 무엇인지 등을 이야기하는 형식으로 글 전개 방식을 완전히 바꾸었다. 이런 깔끔한 내용이 나오는 게 겉으로 보기엔 쉬워 보이지만, 생각보다 많은 것을 버리고 타협해야 해서 의외로 이 과정이 오래 걸렸다.
 

3문단: 학업 경험 1 - 전공 관련

This experience made me want to study how to run projects more systematically where people who are in conflict can work together through various art media. So, while taking modules in ‘Culture Plan and Art Management’ and ‘Theory and Practice of Cultural Planning’ as part of my degree, I studied the industrial meaning of culture and arts, the principles of management and planning, as well as related examples. In particular, I gained many ideas while learning how in specific situations art can resolve social conflicts through creative expression and operational methods. In addition, I realised that in order to resolve social conflicts through art, it is necessary to be able to approach various phenomena of modern society from a humanistic perspective. Through the modules ‘Korean Society in the Eye of Religion’ and ‘Doing Theology in the Modern World’, I was able to gain the insight on solving various modern and classical social problems using theology. Through this, I was able to build a foundation of expertise for resolving social conflicts through art.
 
3문단에는 오케스트라 활동을 하다 보니 생긴 관심사를 어떻게 학업적으로 풀어내고 무엇을 배웠는지를 적었다. 내가 신문방송학전공, 기독교문화전공의 어떤 과목에서 어떤 수업을 들으며 석사 지원 전공과 관련된 어떤 배경지식을 쌓았는지 등의 학업적 능력을 보여주기 위해 학교에서 들은 수업들을 나열하였다. 이는 내가 학부 전공과 석사 전공이 다름에도, 학부에서 석사 전공과 연관된 지식들을 배웠음을 어필하기 위함도 있었다. 
 

4문단: 학업 경험 2 - 전공 과목 과제 관련

As part of my 'Theory and Practice of Cultural Planning' module, I prepared a project proposal called 'Music at the Limits, Orchestra at the Limits' based on the motif of the 'West-Eastern Divan Orchestra' founded by Daniel Barenboim and Edward Said. This project brought together musicians and scholars practicing social work in conflict zones around the world, at the centre of the 'limits', in order to create an orchestra, interviews, and documentary. I actively used my practical experience and theoretical knowledge to plan the project objectives, expected benefits, casting, location, promotion, and future sustainability by myself. In addition, while conducting research, I learnt a lot about the management, atmosphere, and culture of foreign orchestras. This gave me the opportunity to realise my passion to study cultural policy and arts management on a global basis.
 
4문단에는 내가 3문단에서 나열한 수업 중 하나를 선택하여 해당 수업에서 진행했던 과제를 작성하였다. 당시 해당 수업시간 과목에서 '다니엘 바렌보임과 서동시집 오케스트라'를 참고하여 직접 UNESCO에 제안할 프로젝트 기획서를 작성해보는 과제가 있었다. 나는 내가 좋아하며 해당 과목 교수님이 해설을 쓴 에드워드 사이드의 음악평론집 '경계의 음악(Music at the Limits)'를 참고하여 '경계의 음악, 경계의 오케스트라(Music at the Limits, Orchestra at the Limits)'라는 제목의 프로젝트 기획서를 작성하였다.
 
교수님께서 딱 이 주제를 과제로 재시자마자 나는 '이건 그냥 나 에이쁠 받으라고 하는거다!'라는 생각이 들 정도로 '이건 내꺼다'라는 느낌이 강하게 들었다. 실제로도 내가 나중에 기회가 된다면 이 프로젝트를 실행에 옮겨보고 싶다고 생각할 정도로 마음에 들었던 결과물이 나왔고, 이 과제를 하면서 내가 좀 더 넓은 세상에서 내 능력을 펼쳐보고 싶다는 생각을 하게 되었다.
 

5문단: 학업 외 경험 2 - 문화기획단체 관련 경험

While reviewing case studies where social conflicts were resolved through the arts, I became aware of the ‘ㅇㅇ,’ a non-profit organisation that introduced community art to Korea. I took a semester off to develop more professional skills and joined 'ㅇㅇ' as a project manager to undertake a project aiming to resolve regional conflicts through art. One of the projects included planting trees with the region’s stories based on various sectors of cultural diversity (gender, diaspora, seniors, young people, etc.). I also had a chance to collaborate with local artists to produce wooden signs using scrap materials, so that members of the community would have the opportunity to understand and communicate with each other. Through this, I was able to feel the positive impact of art, as well as developing project management skills. However, since most of the projects were operated with government support, we faced restrictions of scope in having to plan projects that appealed to the government and thus I determined to seek answers in the UK, which faced these problems before Korea and where lively discussions of the issues are already taking place.
 
나는 잠시 휴학을 하고 문화기획단체에서 일한 적이 있기 때문에 그 경험도 썼다. 이 부분 역시 할 얘기는 산더미 같았으나 그저 저 정도로만 쓰고 멈춘 게 너무 아쉬웠다. 
 

6문단: 영국, 글래스고에서 공부하고 싶은 이유

During my undergraduate studies, I learnt that the UK was the first country in the world to systematise cultural policy, and Glasgow is one of the successful cities in regenerating itself through art. I was attracted to the renowned MSc Creative Industries & Cultural Policy Programme at Glasgow. I would like to gain a broader perspective and ability by comparing the cultural policies of the UK and other countries with Korea. Through the ‘Project Management (Creative Industries and Cultural Policy)’ module, I want to develop more professional planning skills as well as consider solutions to the limitations I have experienced before. Also, through the ‘Creative Industries and Cultural Policy Core 1’ module, I would like to study socially engaged arts examples of meaningful social artistic engagement for both society and artists. Moreover, I would like to study about art regeneration by reviewing examples of highly regarded creative cities such as Glasgow.
 
이 부분에는 다른 나라가 아닌 왜 영국에서, 왜 글래스고에서 문화정책&창조산업, 예술경영을 공부하고자 하는지, 이 석사 코스를 통해 기대하는 바가 무엇인지를 적었다. 정말 뻔한 내용이지만, 자세한 이야기를 다 쓰기엔 분량이 너무 모자랐다.
 

7문단: 결론

While pursuing the master’s programme at the University of Glasgow, I would like to research ways to run and support art activities such as my various experiences, which have been recognised as socially necessary, more systematically. After graduation, I would like to join a music organisation such as the Chineke! Orchestra that pursues the values of cultural diversity and aims to resolve social conflict through music, and plan or support programmes that espouse my personal values. I am certain that the various cultural policy modules offered by the MSc Creative Industries & Cultural Policy Programme at Glasgow and the opportunity to rub shoulders with related researchers and experts will be of great help in realising my future dreams.
 
마지막에는 내가 이런 학문적인 배경지식도 있고, 예술 관련 경험도 있고, 업무적으로도 이런 경험이 있으니 나를 뽑아야 함을 어필해야 한다. 나는 나의 능력/스킬이 석사 코스에 어떤 식으로 기여할지, 석사 학업 이후 구체적인 미래 계획은 어떠할지를 작성하였다. 이 부분은 1문단과 연관되어 수미상관을 이루어야 하는데, 자칫하면 같은 문장을 또 쓸 수 있게 되므로 최대한 다른 표현으로 마무리하기 위해 노력하였다.

2. PS 작성 시 유의사항

1) 각 단락별 길이는 비슷해야 함

유학원에서 가장 신경써 주셨던 부분이 바로 각 단락별 길이 맞추기이다. 내가 하도 문단별 분량이 들쭉날쭉했기 때문에 이 부분에서 유학원의 도움을 많이 받았다.
 

2) 누구나 할 수 있는 일반적인 이야기를 지양하고, 지원자 본인에 대한 이야기가 들어가야 함

내가 하고 싶은 이야기를 하려면 복잡한 설명들이 필요하니, 처음 PS를 수정했을 때는 내가 너무 뻔한 이야기만 적었다는 평을 많이 들었다. 그저 '세계 평화에 기여하기 위해', '사회를 내가 생각하기에 더 좋게 바꾸기 위해' 같은 포괄적인 이야기보다는, 그것을 이루기 위해 내가 구체적으로 무엇을 어떻게 할 것인가에 대한 이야기를 적어야 한다. 근데 이게 이렇게 해야 한다는 것을 알면서도 말을 만들어 내기가 쉽지 않다. 
 

3) 단락별 주제를 이야기할 때는 논리적인 근거가 뒷받침되어야 함

나의 경우, '음악으로 사회적 갈등을 해소하고 문화다양성 가치를 확산시키고 싶다'는 전체적인 큰 주제의 근거로 각 문단의 학업 경험, 학업 외 경험을 나열하였다. 각 문단별로 각각 다른 이야기를 하고 있지만, 내가 그 활동을 하며 지향하고자 한 가치, 얻어낸 성과물들은 다 큰 주제와 연관된 것이다. 이처럼 큰 주제 근거의 예시로 지원자 자신의 경험, 에피소드, 활동을 많이 활용한다.
 
참고로... PS에는 쓰지 못했지만 나는 사실 '음악으로 사회적 갈등을 해소한다'는 말을 하는 것을 조심스러워하는 편이다. '음악으로 사회적 갈등을 해소한다'는 표현보다는, '갈등을 겪는 사람 혹은 집단의 갈등을 이 음악활동이 완전히 해소해주진 못하겠지만, 적어도 그들이 함께 무언가를 할 수 있다는 것은 보여줄 수 있다'라는 표현이 내 생각과 더욱 가까운 편이다. 다니엘 바렌보임도 서동시집 오케스트라 관련해서 '우리의 목표는 세계 평화 뭐 이런 게 아니고, 그냥 함께 음악을 할 수 있다는 것을 보여주는 것이다'라는 말을 했다. 근데 이렇게 쓰면 너무 지저분해 보이므로... 그냥 과감히 '음악으로 사회적 갈등을 해소한다'고 썼다. 그래도 뭐 거짓말을 한 건 아니니까!
 

4) 최대한 단문을 많이 활용해야 함

내가 제일 못 하는 것 중 하나가 바로 '단문으로 글쓰기'이다. 단문으로 글쓰기가 좋은 것은 누구나 다 안다. 하지만... 너무 어렵다. 그래서 PS에도 최대한 단문으로 쓴다고 썼지만 여전히 복잡한 문장들이 많다.

3. PS 작성 시 고민했던 부분

PS를 쓰면서 가장 고민되었던 부분이 여러 사례를 조금씩 쓸 것인지, 한 가지 사례를 골라 구체적으로 쓸 것인지였다. 그래서 처음에는 오케스트라 하나를 자세히 쓰는 방향으로 했는데, 유학원에서 그 방식보다는 여러 사례를 조금씩 쓰는 방향을 추천했다. 처음에는 갈등했으나 나보다 PS 합격 경험이 많은 유학원을 믿고 가기로 했고, 결국 그렇게 써서 합격했다. 다시 생각해보면, 내 생각대로 했으면 떨어졌을 것 같다. 
 
'문체'에 대한 고민도 많았다. 사실, 나는 생긴 것과는 달리 굉장히 negative한 사람이다. 학교 과제들도 다 그런 식으로 썼고, 나의 삶의 원천은 아직까지는 '분노'이며 매사에 최악의 결과를 염두에 두고 행동하는 스타일에 가깝다. 그래서 이런 나의 특징을 장점으로 봐 줄 교수님들이 많은 성공회대에 왔고, 대학에서 나의 이런 면들이 좋은 평가를 받았다. 하지만, 내가 지원할 석사 대학의 입학팀이나 교수님들은 이런 나를 어떻게 받아들일지 알 수가 없었다. 그래서 원래 내 스타일대로 쓸지, 아니면 나의 성격을 조금 죽이고 누구나 좋아해 줄 만한 스타일로 쓸지 고민을 많이 했다. 
 
그러다가 내린 결론은, 후자식 글쓰기였다. 신문방송학과에서 내가 제일 좋아하는 교수님께서 '글은 꼭 읽는 사람을 고려해야 한다'고 말씀하셨던 말이 계속 귀에 맴돌았기 때문이다. 그래서 정말 많은 것을 내려놓고 거의 유학원에 내 몸을 맡겼다. 결과적으로 내가 처음 썼던 것보다 훨씬 깔끔하고 PS다운 글이 나왔고, 지원한 학교들에 합격하게 되었다.
